Our Training Services

Police officers face special challenges when dealing with people living with various conditions including mental illness, drug or alcohol additions, autism, PTSD, and others.  Assessing the level of danger can be difficult, but specialized training can help officers to understand and de-escalate these situations.

Community leaders have recognized that implementing de-escalation strategies for the workplace is good business. They have asked us to use the underlying principles of de-escalation to design appropriate workplace strategies to effectively prevent or manage workplace disputes.

CENTURION SKILLS has been a leader in the design, development, and delivery of de-escalation trainings for law enforcement and other public safety professionals.

De-escalation Courses

We offer three different courses, each with its own specific focus:

  1. Mental illness and behavior disorders
  2. Military veterans in crisis
  3. “Pre-escalation” awareness and communication techniques including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Internal Affairs Courses

Transparency, public accountability, and justice are foundational principles of policing in a democratic society.

Our Internal Affairs classes teach officers how to conduct effectively, timely, and impartial investigations that uphold the public trust. The 3-day classes provide officers with a comprehensive base of knowledge and a set of proven practices, that will prepare the new investigator to confidently conduct these important cases.

About Our Instructors & Consultants

Our team is comprised of experienced public safety and private sector professionals who bring both academic and real-world solutions to today’s challenges.

William Micklus – President & CEO

Recognized as an effective diversity consultant, Mr. Micklus was chosen to join a team to train the officers of the U.S. Capitol Police Department in diversity practices. This led to his participation in the design and delivery of both the classroom and Train the Trainer versions of the U.S. Department of Justice sponsored Public Safety De-escalation Strategies for Military Veterans in Crisis. This popular program was re-funded several times due to the successful application of its teachings.

Northwestern University selected Micklus as a Course Director for their prestigious School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) executive training program and the Upper Midwest Community Policing Institute designated Bill as their Associate Director where he managed training projects such as the Native American Training Series and delivered those classes to Tribal Police and Communities across America. The State of Minnesota funded a training initiative called De-escalation Strategies for Persons with Mental Illness or Behavior Disorders in Crisis which gained support of veterans in the state. Micklus’ testimony before the legislature helped to ensure the program’s continued funding. Micklus began his police career in the City of Burnsville, MN where he and his family are still proud to call home.
